Circular Design Guidebook is a project in collaboration with Covestro aiming to introduce the Circular Design strategies and provide sustainable material selection guidance for engineers, designers, researchers and procurement professionals in the Electronics, Electrical and Appliance industry. It serves as not only a guide to circular design, a communication medium between designers and clients, but can also be used in workshops to promote circular design principles.

Circular Design Guidebook is a project in collaboration with Covestro aiming to introduce the Circular Design strategies and provide sustainable material selection guidance for engineers, designers, researchers and procurement professionals in the Electronics, Electrical and Appliance industry. It serves as not only a guide to circular design, a communication medium between designers and clients, but can also be used in workshops to promote circular design principles.

Detailed description of the submitted project/idea
The UN Environment Program (UNEP) reported that 53.6 million metric tons of electronic waste (e-waste) were generated in 2019, a 21% increase in five years. According to the “Global E-waste Monitor Report 2020”, only 17.4% of the e-waste from 2019 was collected and recycled while the rest was disposed of and incinerated. The same report predicted that e-waste would reach 74 million metric tons by 2030.
We published the Circular Design Guidebook with the world-leading high-tech polymer supplier, Covestro, aiming to provide guidance for the forward-looking Electronics, Electrical and Appliance (EEA) industry to understand the Circular Design strategies and processes of material selection, so that next-generation electrical and electronic products can be better designed for recycling and circularity.
The guidebook includes 3 main chapters: From linear to circular; Circular Design; Material selection from a sustainable perspective. Besides acquainting people with concepts and regulations, we also map out the decision process and include modules for readers to use in practice. By implementing the strategies into product design, we look forward to opening the door of circularity and sustainability.
If e-waste was well recycled and reused, high value materials such as platinum, gold, silver, copper would have a recoverable value of $57 billion - a sum that’s greater than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of most countries. Continuing to exploit resources and use materials inefficiently will create greater environmental challenges and consequences.
