Please take a look at these magnificent winning works, along with reviews from the two judges from KIGI and the guest commentator, jewelry creator Etsuko Sonobe.
We plan to hold exhibitions and sales for these winners at OFS from around mid-August. We will let you know as soon as details have been decided, so please look forward to it.

I cut out the air bubbles which appear when heat is applied to tracing paper, and created metal parts to match each shape.
Materials: Tracing paper, silver 925, stainless steel

I like the sense of transience. I am drawn in, wondering how they were made. There is a randomness in the materials too, isn't there? It is interesting that this is applied precisely to the design. The fact that the method of creation is wrapped in mystery is fascinating.

Judge’s comment: Yoshie Watanabe(KIGI)
I am attracted to the texture of the material. I was surprised that this sort of processing method exists. I wonder if she heated it with a hair dryer by chance and discovered it. I would also like to know how she cut around them. They look as though they have separated naturally. I wonder if she is someone who enjoys experimenting and discovering new methods. It's really fascinating.

Judge’s comment: Etsuko Sonobe(jewelry designer)
I got the sense that she was thinking earnestly about jewelry, rather than simply allowing the material or the idea to take priority. The brooch pin is both functional in construction and beautifully-shaped. By adding a curve to the brooch pin, it seems to float up from your clothing a little when you wear it, which I feel really makes the most of this material.

It's there, but it's not. It's not there, but it is. There's a certain sense of existence even though it's not physically there.
That's the deep fascination and energy I feel which is communicated by the small presence that is jewelry.
I made drawings in order to collect shapeless things, and I made a brooch. I fired the entire brooch with cloisonne approximately seven times, and regulated the polished finish to give it a matte look. I completed everything myself, from the drawing, processing, firing the cloisonne, and completing the product.
Materials: Silver, cloisonne, gold leaf, gold plating

Judge’s comment: Ryosuke Uehara(KIGI)
The design is lovely, but the luster and texture of the cloisonne is good too. I like the uncalculated feel. It has been designed, but
I think she drew the majority of it with her right brain. I suppose that's why it conveys something somewhat nostalgic which remains with you.
The expression in the picture is also nostalgic, but it leaves me with an impression which is different to that of recent accessories. -
Judge’s comment: Yoshie Watanabe(KIGI)
Cloisonne tends to be associated with nostalgia, but it has been finished to give a feeling of newness. I like how it is free and daring. Brooches that take on various shapes depending on how they are worn are interesting too. I feel the possibility of being able to create an unlimited number of fun accessories.
-
Judge’s comment: Etsuko Sonobe(jewelry designer)
I feel its warmth as jewelry in the shapes which have been created from drawings.
I'm also taken with the texture of the cloisonne which has been polished to a matte finish.
It's likely to broaden new possibilities in expressions with cloisonne, and I look forward to future developments.

A brooch which presents a hair-like texture with cypress. It is produced by striking square timber.
-
Judge’s comment: Ryosuke Uehara(KIGI)
I was interested, and thought it was well-done. I think the work is extremely detailed, and I got the sense that she researched the materials exhaustively. I think it would look good even worn on a heavy coat. It would look cool even if worn by a man.
-
Judge’s comment: Yoshie Watanabe(KIGI)
It is very unique and interesting. It has a mysteriousness that makes me wonder how she made it. I'm sure it took a long time to make. I also like the gap between the bushy part and the square timber. I would also like it as an artistic object for display.
-
Judge’s comment: Etsuko Sonobe(jewelry designer)
The changes in the texture, which becomes fibrous like this when square timber is struck, is interesting.
And I can imagine that when you attach it to your clothes, it might take on an unexpected appearance.

A brooch made with the feeling of wanting to keep the sensations I have experienced (trembling, my heart pounding, being choked up) in response to the lovely things and lovely words I have found in everyday life quietly within myself so that others don't notice. The pearl inside is designed so that it cannot be seen from the front, but it's in your line of sight when you put it on.
Materials: brass, pearl
-
Judge’s comment: Ryosuke Uehara(KIGI)
It is a well thought-out design. The fact that a pearl is hidden within the accessory which can only be seen by the person wearing it is good. The thinking and the construction are linked, or perhaps I should say it has been properly calculated. I liked the fact that despite that, it is poetic.
-
Judge’s comment: Yoshie Watanabe(KIGI)
It is beautifully made and well-finished. The concept that only you can see the pearl is poetic, but the sharp differences in the presentation were charming.
-
Judge’s comment: Etsuko Sonobe(jewelry designer)
The simple design is filled with a sense of excitement, and I like it very much. If the inside were polished, the pearl would be reflected, and I thought that might be beautiful too.
I feel that wearing jewelry is important not only for dressing up, but also for its emotional influence.
