Brief concept description of the submitted project/idea
The aim of expanding environmental awareness to the users is one of the backbones when designing our products. We selected PET recycled yarns as the main material throughout the collection as it embodies sustainability concept in modern day fashion, whilst fitting into the philosophy of Circular Economy.
This collection is inspired by one of Thailand’s most significant fabrics, Kaoma. Kaoma is a multipurpose textile that has been a huge part of Thai’s way of life for centuries. The graphics on our handwoven fabrics are derived from Kaoma’s original aesthetics, which are bold, and colorful checkered images. Pleated structure is another detail that we have incorporated across the pieces to add our own twist into the outfits. Pleating allows the textiles to become more hybrid, as they can stretch into the user’s body differently, maximizing adaptability and versatility.
Nowadays in the capital, Kaoma fabrics are mostly visible on construction workers, which is a group of people that can best visualize the multifunctional aspects of this fabric. Doitung is deeply aware of this matter and has created outfits that are inspired by the workwear of Thailand’s working class. -

Detailed description of the submitted project/idea
Recycled PET yarn has been selected to serve as the material in our hand woven collection of clothing. The process of Recycled PET yarn is begun by collecting plastic bottle trash, commonly found in the Thai Ocean. These plastic waste then undergo a recycling process in order to be reproduced into usable yarns. We adopted the philosophy of the Circular Design System to make the most out of all the existing resources, and lower use of new supply. This process minimized the use of new energy up to 30% when compared to extruding yarns from Virgin Polyester.
Pleating structure is also applied throughout the outfits, enhancing their expandability and versatility as workwear. This pleating process was made possible by using 100% synthetic fabric. Pleating is one of the essential techniques that is deeply inherited within the traditional costume of the Doitung’s tribes. Traditionally, pleats in the tribes are achieved by a combination of hand-folding, hand-embroidery and compression. Although a very respectful method with rich history, it could be time consuming as it may take years for the fabric to achieve its pleats. It may also result in an uneven surface as the pleats may flatten out through time as the procedures are completed on natural fibre without any stimulating agent. By factoring in the characteristic of an active modern day lifestyle across the design process, we are able to create our very own traditional-pleats-inspired outfits. Recycled PET yarns are used instead of natural fibres because it is a thermoplastic and responds well to heat. This process results in pleats that are long lasting, and versatile; suitable for everyday workwear. -
