The Hat Shield is a combination of a face mask and a face shield which was developed as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In densely populated urban areas, it can be difficult to exercise outside safely, as most people don't have the space to exercise indoors in the safety of their homes. The Hat Shield maximizes the amount of protection from airborne viruses and bacteria while not restricting the user's breathing or causing pain behind the ears like other face masks. Thus, people living in busy cities are able to keep themselves and others safe from pathogens without sacrificing important parts of their lifestyle. -

My design is a democratic experiment in that it creates a situation where togetherness and community is still a possibility, even in circumstances where it is necessary for people to keep each other at a distance. Outdoor areas such as public parks and streets, where many people run or walk for exercise, are free to use and allow people from all backgrounds to interact and feel that they are not in isolation. As COVID-19 threatens to make such places inaccessible, it is necessary to create solutions that are safe and affordable so that people can enjoy their lives and stay as healthy and connected as possible.
